6 Magical Bioluminescence Tours Puerto Escondido
Puerto Escondido, located on the coast of Oaxaca, is known for its surfing, stunning beaches, and abundance of marine life. But many travellers miss out on the magic that lies just offshore in the freshwater lagoons.
Are you looking for the best bioluminescence tour in Puerto Escondido? A tour of the lagoons is a magical and educational experience that canβt be missed!
Bioluminescence, the emission of light by living organisms, is abundant in the lagoons around Puerto Escondido. But they can be tricky to get to, so the best way to experience this phenomenon is by taking a tour.

This is the best bioluminescence Puerto Escondido tour! I took this tour and the service and expertise were excellent.
The guides picked us up in a comfortable, air-conditioned van right from our hotel for the 1-hour and 15-minute drive it took us to get to the lagoon.
You will drive through many small towns, so I loved taking in the scenery as the sun was setting. Moto taxis, chickens, and just people going about their day entertained us all the way out to Chacahua.
Tip from a local: The best time to see the bioluminescence is during a new moon. There is almost no other light pollution at the Chacahua Lagoons National Park!
When you arrive there are bathrooms to use if needed, then your guide will bring you down to the boat!
Swimming is optional, I will admit it can be a little unsettling jumping into the water in the dark, but believe me when I say that it is so, so worth it!
We spent an hour or so on the lagoon, playing with the bioluminescence and just gazing at the stars. There were only 5 of us on the boat, so we had plenty of time to enjoy the experience!
We had a clear night sky in January and a new moon, so the star gazing was almost as magical as the bioluminescence was.
Tip from a local: There are two lagoons outside of Puerto Escondido that have bioluminescence, Chacahua and Manialtepec. Chacahua has a better population of bioluminescence but is further away. However, I feel it is absolutely worth it!

Tour Highlights
- Hotel Pickup and dropoff
- Local Guide in English or Spanish
- Sunset release of baby turtles into the sea
- Boat ride into the lagoon, optional swimming.
What can be more magical than swimming with the shimmering plankton? Releasing baby turtles just before!
This tour makes good use of the evening by combining a baby turtle release with a swim in the lagoon.
The coast of Oaxaca is fortunate to have several non-profit groups that have been working hard to preserve the sea turtle population in the area.
Turtles will always nest on the beach they were hatched on, so they must crawl through the sand on their own toward the sea.
Releases of the baby turtles typically happen at sunset to offer them a better chance of survival from predators, which makes it the perfect activity to pair with the nighttime swim in the bioluminescence!
I did a turtle release near Mazunte and it was such a fun and educational experience, so if you have the chance to take this tour, I highly recommend it!

I think this is an incredible tour offering for anyone staying in Huatulco but is interested in seeing more of the coast. In just one day you will get to see the highlights of the Oaxacan coast!
Leaving your accommodations in Huatulco, you will head to Mazunte to visit the Santuario La Escobilla, the famous turtle sanctuary.
From there, you will head towards Puerto Escondido to visit the Manialtepec Lagoon where you will ride horses along the rivers and the beach!
After taking in the sunset while horseback riding along the sea, you will head to the boat to swim with the bioluminescence.
If this tour is a bit much for your group, you might consider spending a few days in Puerto Escondido to take in tours like the bioluminescence!
It’s really easy to get from Huatulco to Puerto Escondido by bus or taxi, so heading there from Huatulco for a couple days is also a great option!
About the Bioluminescent Lagoons of Oaxaca
There are two main lagoons where you can see the bioluminescence near Puerto Escondido. Laguna de Manialtepec, and the Lagunas de Chacahua.
Lagunas de Chacahua
The Lagunas de Chacahua is a protected, national park area on the coast of Oaxaca, about an hour north of Puerto Escondido.
These lagoons are filled with mangrove forests, and incredible wildlife, and are known to have bioluminescent plankton all year round.
During the day, tours are offered to these lagoons to birdwatch, ride through the mangroves, and just experience this unique ecosystem.
There are also unique cultural groups living along the lagoons and even on some of the islands. Some are great to visit for their food and hand-crafted goods!
In my opinion, a Chacahua bioluminescence tour is the best option from Puerto Escondido, because it has the best chances of seeing the bioluminescence.
Tip from a Local: There is also a town of Chacahua near Mazunte, it is not the same thing as the lagoons! So if you are looking on a map, be sure to look for the Lagunas de Chacahua.
La Laguna de Manialtepec
La Laguna de Manialtepec is only about 20 minutes from Puerto Escondido by car, making it far more popular to visit than Chacahua.
The bioluminescence in Manialtepec can be amazing, but only at certain times of the year. But, a Manialtepec lagoon bioluminescence tour is the easiest tour to take from Puerto Escondido. So if you are short on time, it’s definitely worth the trip!
