Self Care and Extended Health in Huatulco
Whether you are in Huatulco for holiday or an extended stay, you need to take care of yourself! We all like to indulge in a spa day or massage when on holiday, but we all know by now that self-care is so much more than that. Thankfully Huatulco has many services to offer, whether you want to relax, reset, or just maintain your hygiene practices, there is some form of extended health service here in Huatulco for you!
If you are coming from a developed nation, the price point of many extended healthcare activities can be very attractive in Mexico, so why not treat yourself?
Because Huatulco is such a remote and small town, it can be very difficult to find information online, so I have collected here as many of the top-rated service providers I can find. All are highly recommended by locals and or myself, and have granted me permission to post their details here!
General Note: I moved to Huatulco in February 2021 so most of my experiences have been during the odd times that were 2020-2022. I have listed prices here to give you an idea of what certain treatments cost, but the practitioners have every right to increase or modify their prices over the coming season. Please be respectful of all the hard-working people of Huatulco!
The Basics
The Best Places to Get a Hair Cut in Huatulco
While I love the effects of the sun and sea on my skin and hair, it is no secret that they do a lot of damage as well. With how much I am in the sea, I need to get my haircut much more frequently than I ever did back home. Thankfully Huatulco has some great, affordable options!
Aries Hair & Nails
Location: La Crucecita Contact: +52 958 104 – 2761 Languages: English, some Spanish
Mikel and Tammy Aries are a Canadian couple that immigrated to Huatulco in 2015 and have been here full time ever since! Back in Winnipeg, Mike worked as a hair colourist for years and is very skilled in cuts and colours. His skills make him unique in Huatulco as the best haircuts for women, expecially if you like to try different styles or need something more than a trim. If you are careful about who touches your hair or are looking for a top-quality hair treatment, Mike is your guy!
Aries is conveniently located right downtown, and it’s best to connect with them over Whatsapp. They are extremely popular in the high season though, so if you are planning a cut for between December to March, make sure you book well in advance!
Mr. Finest
Location: La Crucecita Contact: +52 958 124 – 0395 Languages: Spanish, English
If you have hair on your head as well as your face, you might want to check out Mr. Finest’s barber shop. Also right downtown, Edson of Mr. Finest offers the best men’s cuts as well as the only (that I know of) hot shave in town! If you are looking to treat yourself to a great haircut or a nice beard trim, this is the place for you!
Estetica Karen
Location: La Crucecita Cost: $100+ Contact: +52 115-2757 Languages: Spanish
If you are comfortable with your Spanish Estetica Karen on Carrizal comes highly reviewed from immigrants to Huatulco. Particularly for men who are looking for a scissors cut, not a razor cut from a barber, Karen does excellent work!
Hair Removal in Huatulco
On the other side of hair care, we have hair removal services! One of the side effects of living in a beach town is that some of us might choose to spend a little more time removing unwanted hair than we might in the cold winters up north.
Beauté Laser
Location: Chahué Contact: +52 958 688-2112 Languages: Spanish
Huatulco’s best (and only) laser hair removal service is Beauté Laser in Chahué. Appointments for consultation can be made through their website, which would allow you to translate it easily with your chrome browser. Otherwise, you may wish to bring a bilingual buddy to make sure you have clear communication with the practitioners at your first appointment.
Huatulco Manicures and Pedicures
While on holiday in Huatulco, chances are you will be headed out for a nice dinner or maybe even be attending a wedding at some point during your stay. Getting your nails done can be a great option to help protect your nails from the softening effects of the sea!
Manicures and pedicures are for everyone! With how much time you will spend playing in the sand and wearing sandals, getting a manicure or pedicure in Huatulco is a great idea to help maintain your skin and nails. And it feels so great!
Aries Hair & Nails
Location: La Crucecita Contact: +52 958 104 – 2761 Languages: English, some Spanish
While Mike handles the barber chair, Tammy has got your nails covered, hands and feet! Aries’ Hair & Nails is the best place in Huatulco to get a top-quality manicure or pedicure. They have a lovely pedicure station set up in the salon so you can kick back and relax while you wait for the results.
Tammy offers regular or gel nails, and she will give your hands and feet a great treatment and massage to boot. I always take my dad when he is in town to deal with his cracked heels!
If you’re lucky, the pastry lady might stop by too like she did while I was there!
Beauty Treatments
Before you judge, there are many reasons for people to choose beauty treatments, especially permanent solutions. For me, I have fair features and hate wearing makeup, plus I am always in the water! Just in 2022 I made the decision to get semi-permanent makeup and wow, I absolutely love it. So don’t knock it till you try it!
Microblading & Permanent Make-Up
If you are like me and have invisible eyebrows, microblading could be for you! There are a few parlours in Huatulco that offer microblading treatments for eyebrows.
Aries Hair & Nails
Location: La Crucecita Contact: +52 958 104 – 2761 Languages: English, some Spanish
Yes, they’re back, but just because they are that good! Once a month Mike & Tammy bring in microblading specialist, usually around the first week of the month. You will need two appointments to complete the treatment.
The first treatment costs $3500 pesos, then a follow-up happens about 3 months later and costs $750.
Appointments can be made through Tammy, she will let you know when Ara is in town!
Micropigmentatión: Beauty Studio
As far as I am aware, this is the only other studio in Huatulco that offers permanent makeup. They don’t have many reviews online quite yet, but I plan to check them out for getting my eyelashes done soon and will let you know what the service is like!
Huatulco Medical Spas
There are a couple small clinics that are offering more and more elective medical treatments.
Oromed Clinics Huatulco
Oromed is a private clinic in Huatulco that many people choose to visit instaed of the local hospital, for the same reasons you might choose a private or public health care facility. Oromed has two branches, see below for the Oromed Specialty Clinic medical services.
Oromed Medical Spa
The Oromed Medical Spa Huatulco offers services we would consider electives in the US and Canada. Treatments you can find at Oromed Medical Spa Huatulco are:
- Botox Injections
In 2022, the cost was $4,550 pesos for 60 units, with a complimentary follow-up 1-2 weeks later. - Microdermabrasion
- Skin Peel
- Laser Hair removal
- Acne Control
- And more!
In addition to the services they offer every day, Oromed Huatulco also hosts travelling specialty surgeons, including a cosmetic plastic surgeon, so if you are looking to have a major surjery done there is a good chance they will offer it there.
Keep in mind: If you are considering any of these beauty treatments while visiting Huatulco, keep in mind that many of the services have strict after care, often limiting exposure to the sun and water. Many of the appointments also require follow-up, so be sure you are planning around not be on the beach for a good chunk of time!
Extended Health in Huatulco
If you are into total-body health, you are in luck! Huatulco has several highly recommended practitioners, some of whom I visit on a regular basis.
Massage
There are many, many places to get a massage in Huatulco. Being a tourist town there are many hotels and spas that offer varying relaxation treatments. However, if you are like me and want a deep-tissue, healing massage therapy session, these are the best places in Huatulco to get a massage.
Dehidi
Cost: $500 Location: Varies, Sector U Languages: Spanish, some English Contact: +52 553 459-2445
Dehidi is my absolute first choice for getting a massage in Huatulco. She works mostly from her home while she finds a suitable studio space, so be aware you may need to be flexible on her location.
Massages with Dehidi are typically around 2 hours and cost only $500 pesos. She likes to incorporate holistic healing in her treatments, so you may find her asking questions about how things make you feel, where you hold stress, etc. It can sometimes be a little overwhelming but I promise she is so, so good.
I feel Dehidi offers the best massage in Huatulco because she addresses the whole body, She will assess you from head to toe and genuinely cares about addressing items that are causing you pain. And she is just so lovely!
Dehidi is best reached over Whatsapp, she speaks some English but you will have a much better experience if you can communicate a little in Spanish.
Physiotherapy
Rogelio Mejía Guerrero
Location: Sector J Contact: +52 958 106 – 0493 lasmejoresmanos@outlook.com Languages: Spanish, some English
Rogelio comes highly recommend from the Huatulco Facebook groups as both a physiotherapist and a chiropractor. He is located in Sector J and is open every day from 9am to 8pm.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture has done amazing things for me in treating my TMJ, and I know many people who struggle with chronic pain find success with these treatments as well. Here are the best places in Huatulco to get acupuncture.
Cost: $400 Location: Downtown Languages: Spanish, some English Contact: +52 958 100-4720
Cindy offers acupuncture treatments with the electrode technique. After your consult with her, she will let you get comfy in one of the treatment rooms, then place the needles and attach a small machine that sends electrical impulses, set at your comfort level.
Sessions are about 45 minutes to one hour and cost $400 pesos per treatment. She is located next to Teresina in the downtown.
Dental Care in Huatulco
There are few highly recommended dentists in Huatulco, here I will mention the one I visit, and some other recommended practitioners.
Karen Mishell
Cost: $500 Location: Sector U Languages: Spanish, English Contact: +52 958 107-1898
Born and raised in Huatulco, Karen has just returned to the bays in the last year to set up her dental practice! She can be found in sector U and has an beautiful, pristine office on a quiet side street.
She provides general teeth cleaning for $500 pesos, and does other things like cavities, x-rays, consults, etc. She is super young and speaks great English, I definitely recommend her as one of the best dentists in Huatulco.
Myself and my family visit Karen every 6 months, and she helped Manuel with a pretty serious infection!
Dr. Grizelda Castellanos
Location: La Crucectia Contact: +52 958 107-1515 Languages: English, Spanish
Dr. Grizeld is located downtown across from La Crema Bar. He comes highly recommended from other immigrants to Huatulco!
Bahia Dental
If you are looking for a more familiar experience, you might like Bahia Dental. They have a clinic in Sector K!
Things Huatulco Does not have
Unfortunately being a small town, there a few things we don’t have access to. If you have specific health care needs, you might need to make other arrangements for these practitioners.
Ophthalmologist / Eye Doctor
In early 2022, Huatulco’s only eye doctor moved away, if you need a new prescription or any sort of eye care, you will need to travel to a larger centre like Salina Cruz or Puerto Escondido.
Dental Surgeon
While we have some great dentists in Huatulco, we don’t yet have a dental surgeon. However, if you are needing a larger procedure done your dentist will be able to refer you to the specialist that comes to Huatulco once a month!
Botox and Plastic Surgery
If you are coming to Mexico for medical tourism, Huatulco probably won’t be your first pick. We don’t have any clinics that can administer botox for medical or aesthetic needs, or plastic surgeons.
As you can see, there are lots of options in Huatulco for practicing self-care! Have you found a practitioner in Huatulco you love and think should be included on this list? Let me know by emailing me at shev @ shevstrolls.com
