9 Best Roatan Dive Shops for 2026

Planning a scuba dive trip to Roatan?

Roatán is one of the best places in the Caribbean to learn to dive and to log fun dives. The reefs are healthy, the water is warm and clear, and the island has built a strong reputation forsno safe, high quality dive operations.

A little island off the coast of Honduras, Roatan is located at the southernmost part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef system (the second largest barrier reef in the world!). Full of life and calm, warm, tropical waters, Roatan has been a scuba diving mecca for decades.

I lived in Roatán and worked closely with dive shops across the island, guiding snorkel and dive tours from both shore and boat. One of the things that makes Roatán special is how collaborative the dive community is. Dive shops regularly communicate with each other, share site conditions, and work together to make sure divers have the best possible experience.

Thanks to the collaborative nature of the island, there are no “bad” choices when it comes to dive shops! Everywhere will make sure you have a great time.

But every shop has their own personality, service style, and of course I have my favourites.

In this guide, I have ranked Roatán’s best dive shops based on a combination of:

  • Star ratings and verified reviews
  • Consistency of service
  • Safety standards
  • Group size and personal attention
  • Overall diver experience
  • Ownership – I try to prioritize locally or women-owned businesses

This is not about naming one “best” shop for everyone. It is about helping you find the best fit for your diving style, budget, and travel plans.

For dive resorts that bundle accommodation and diving together, see my separate guide to the best Roatán dive resorts.

Note from Shev:
One thing I love about diving in Roatán is how supportive and connected the local dive industry is. Many instructors and divemasters have worked at multiple shops over the years, and most operators share similar standards when it comes to safety, training, and reef protection.

It is very common for dive shops to recommend each other when they are full, when conditions are better on another side of the island, or when a diver would be better suited to a different type of operation. This culture benefits visitors and helps keep the overall quality of diving on the island high.

Because of this, you will not find extreme differences in safety or professionalism between established shops. The main differences are in atmosphere, group size, teaching style, and how personalised the experience feels.

My Top Picks: Roatan Dive Shops

Shev and some of the Octopus Dive School staff during her time working at one of the best dive shops in Roatan!

1. Octopus Dive School

⭐️ RATING: 5 Stars | 📍 LOCATION: Gibson Bight | ✅ Book it!

Why I recommend Octopus:

Octopus Dive School is a small, boutique dive center with focus on personalised service and safety. They keep group sizes small and match divers by experience level, which means you get a more tailored experience underwater.

Full disclosure, this is the dive shop I worked at in Roatan for almost a year. So yes, I’m biased but the reviews speak for themselves. Here is why I think it’s the best!

🫧School focus – they have excellent instructors and don’t rush courses
🫧Small dive groups = more attention from divemasters
🫧Friendly & passionate staff
🫧Gorgeous, intimate location in the mangroves
🫧Never send you to the same site twice!

If you value personalised service and want to feel well looked-after from start to finish, this is a top pick. How many places can you dive where the owner might be your guide?!

You will have a maximum of 6 divers to one dive guide, and the shop is sure to match groups by experience level.

Downside: it’s a little far from West End, you can walk but its about 25 minutes from the roundabout. But! The shop will arrange transportation for you.

But don’t just take my word for it, there is a reason ODS has 5 🌟 on Google.

P.s. Be sure to mention Shev when you book!

2. West Bay Divers – Best for Expeditions

⭐️ RATING: 5 Stars | 📍 LOCATION: West Bay| ✅ Book it!

West Bay Divers is managed by my friend Mayghan, and makes the top of my list for 3 reasons:

  • I know and trust their staff
  • They have a perfect 5 stars on Google
  • They are one of the few shops on the island of Roatan that do trips out to Guanaja, Utila, and Cayos.

I like to recommend West Bay Divers for anyone looking for a higher-end boutique diving experience, and the option to book special excursions. They also have professional photographers from Deep Underwater Photography on site if you want photos!

The downside of West Bay Divers is that they are more expensive than other shops, and are far away if you’re not staying in West Bay. But worth it to go Cayhos or Guanaja for sure!

6. Native Sons

⭐️ RATING: 4.9/5 Stars | 📍 LOCATION: West End | ✅ Book it!

Best for: Comfortable boats and relaxed diving

While Native Sons do not have a perfect 5 star rating, they are beloved by the local dive community and demand inclusion on this list!

And access to Mary’s Place – one of the best dive sites in Roatan!

It is particularly appealing for travellers staying nearby or those who prefer having diving, meals, and relaxation spaces all in one location

How to Choose a Dive Shop in Roatan

To choose the right dive shop in Roatan, you need to decide what you’re looking for and the kid of experience will work with your holiday.

Fun Dives or Courses?
Most dive shops offer everything, but everyone has a specialty! Shops like Octopus and Roatan Divers focus more on teaching, while others like West End Divers are engineerede for getting as many fun dives in a day.

Boutique and Catered Diving vs Independent Diving

Boutique: small groups, personalised service. Attention to detail and individual experience.

Larger shops: more flexibility and lower cost. Larger groups, less personalization.

Neither is “better”, just different experiences. The biggest difference I find is in the care you feel. Octopus will make sure you never go to the same dive site twice, where a bigger shop will go where works best for all the different things happening on the boat.

You also need to consider how many in your group. Are you by yourself or with 5 friends?

Atmosphere and Vibe

Shops in Roatan offer various vibes, like:

  • Social and backpacker-friendly – Coconut Tree Divers
  • Quiet and professional – Clearwater Adventures
  • Family-friendly – Octopus Dive School
  • Training-focused – Roatan Divers

Logistics

Location, location, location!

If you’re staying in West Bay, dive with a shop there! It’s not worth the extra logistics of moving around the island. You’re on holiday, give yourself a break.

Conservation

Since so much of Roatan’s industry centres around diving and snorkelling, most shops take care with the reef and their divers. But there are definitely exceptions. Here are some ways you can advoate for the reefs:

  • Call out bad behaviour
    • if you see guides touching or feeding marine life, or not correcting their divers who do
  • Talk to owners & Managers
    • make sure they are training their staff properly
  • Model good behaviour! Having good buoyancy and caring for marine life is the best we can do

Must-Dive Sites in Roatan

Some of my favourite dive sites in Roatan:

  • Spooky Channel
  • Hole in the Wall
  • Mandy’s Eel Garden
  • Fish Den
  • Rocktopus
  • West End Wall

Keep in mind that the dive sites change names often. It’s a cool project that supports the Roatan Marine Park, but it can be frustrating!

Tips for Diving in Roatan

How to get the most out of your Roatan dives!

Diving in Roatan is great year-round, but the visibility, temperature, and sea life vary from month to month.

Best Time of Year: September is my favourite month to dive. The water is warm, there is so much life, and the coral is spawning. I’ve also had the best night dives in September. But diving can be great year-round.

Best Time of Day: Mornings! Get out earlier than 8 am if you can, before the big resorts get to the dive sites.

Winter Winds: from October to March, the winds change unpredictably. If the wind is coming from the north or the west, the water is too rough to dive on the north side of the island (where the majority of the dive sites are).

This is because it’s too dangerous to get on and off the dive boats, underwater conditions are usually still great.

But! Most dive shops will still take you diving on the south side. It makes for a longer day (and maybe a fee), but worth it to not miss dives and see new sites!

Marine Park: Most dive shops will charge you a $5 fee to support the marine park. It’s not mandatory like in Cozumel or Playa del Carmen because the RMPI is an NGO.

Make sure you only use reef-safe sunscreen & body products, don’t touch or harass animals, and make zero contact with the corals while diving!

FAQs About Roatan Dive Shops

Does Roatan have good scuba diving?

January & October – without fail since 2023 the weather has been the most chaotic these months. January is very cold and lots of north winds, while October is very rainy and the visiblity is terrible.

What is the water temperature in Roatan?

Warm 24-30c – most people need skins or a 3mm. But in January and February it can be cold! And rainy. Instructors and people who get cold will use a 5mm in these months.
