The Best Time to Dive in Roatan: A Month-by-Month Guide
Roatan is a very popular dive destination, but is the diving great all year round?
If you go by popularity, most people will tell you to visit Roatan in the winter. December to March is the high season on the island, but trust me when I say that busiest does not equal the best!
Since 2023, I have visited Roatan at least twice a year, and even spent a year living on the island, managing a dive shop, and working as an instructor. In all my visits, August and September are consistently my favourite times to visit.
The island is quieter, the water is warm, and the weather is generally more stable. Some of my favourite underwater events also happen during this time.
Diving in Roatan is almost always possible, but the island is at the mercy of the trade winds. So while you can get at least some diving in any time of year, the late summer months are the most stable.
This guide breaks down Roatan’s water temperatures, visibility, weather and diving logistics month by month, including my favourite and least favourite times to dive on the island.
When is the best time to dive in Roatan?
Roatan weather does not have a perfectly defined seasonal divide, but conditions can be roughly grouped into a wetter season from October through February and a drier period from March through September.

- Dry season April – September
I believe the best time to visit Roatan for diving is August & September. Here’s why:
- the water is warm
- the weather is consistent, and calmer conditions
- it’s silverside season!
- it’s “off-season”, better deals and not so busy
- fewer cruise ships
The worst time to dive in roatan is October & November. While Roatan doesn’t get hurricanes, it is affected by the eastern storms which send heavy rains & strong winds to the island.
About Roatan Diving Conditions
Most recreational scuba diving in Roatan takes place on the northwest side of the island. If you think of the island like a banana, most dive shops are near the stem in West End, West Bay, and Sandy Bay.
There are more that 50 dive sites in that area, and a wide variety! Coral gardens, channels, walls, and even some shipwrecks. This side of the island is usually protected from the prevailing winds, which tend to come from the south/southeast.
North or west winds create rough conditions on the main dive sites. Even with moderate swell it becomes too dangerous to get in and out of the dive boats. So even if the underwater conditions are good, the logistics to dive become unsafe.
Most of Roatan’s dive shops use small pangas. The dive sites are so close that most shops go back and forth between each dive to change tanks and do intervals on the beach.
Most of the time, it is possible to dive somewhere in Roatan no matter the weather. If the wind is too strong on the West End, many shops will move their boats to the south side of the island.
Then they will drive gear and clients to the boats to dive the calmer south side. Some shops charge a supplemental fee for south side dive days to help cover the extra logistics.
But, you don’t have to cancel your dives and you get to explore a different part of Roatan’s underwater world!

January diving in Roatan is quieter than February, but still part of the wet season.
There is more current, so it’s a great time for drift diving.
The water in January is the coldest not too busy on the island, but wet. It can be windy in January, especially later in the month. Book your dives in advance and be prepared to switch to the south side.
February – coldest month in Roatan

February is peak dive season in Roatan. It’s the busiest month and has the wildest weather. Expect north winds and rains for at least some of the month. Be prepared for some south side diving days.
The water conditions are cool, some current, and lower visibility than in the summer.

April in Roatan has excellent diving conditions. The water is getting warmer, and rainfall drops making the visibility much better.
After the Easter holiday, tourism in Roatan slows down significantly. Some people avoid Roatan over Easter (Semana Santa) because it is very busy with Honduran tourists from the mainland. There is a lot of music and partying that week!

May is one of the best times of the year to dive in Roatan. It’s shoulder season so no crowds.
May is great for getting a good deal on a dive package or accommodations, as the season is much slower than the winter. The weather starts getting warm but it’s not rainy or stormy!

June marks the beginning of the summer season.
The water is warm, the island is relatively quiet and diving conditions are amazing.
Technically it’s the start of the Atlantic hurricane season, but usually Roatan is not affected until later in the year.
July – windiest month

By July the silversides have arrived in Roa! These are one of my favourite things to see scuba diving in Roatan. Big schools of tiny silver fish that cover the reefs.
The weather is HOT. But it’s worth it for the amazing diving.

Silverside season is usually underway, and there is a special energy around the island as coral-spawning season approaches.
August can attract more summer travellers than June, but it still feels far less crowded than February or March.
I think August is the best time to dive in Roatan.

I love early September before the rains come.
September is also an exciting month for coral spawning. The exact timing depends on the coral species, water conditions and lunar cycle, but spawning activity is often monitored after the full moon.
You can volunteer with the Roatan Marine Park all through the summer to monitor the reefs and try to predict when the spawning will occur.
September weather is not guaranteed, especially later in the month. But, if I were choosing my own Roatan dive dates, I would aim for late August or early September.

Look at the difference in rainfall from September to October, and that will tell you how the conditions change in this time. In October storm season is in full swing. The rains wash the silt and garbage from the island into the reefs and significantly impacting visibility.
October is the worst time to dive in Roatan.

Conditions may begin improving later in the month, but November is still a gamble for a dive-focused holiday.

Conditions start to improve in December from the fall storms. In the weeks leading up to Christmas tourism builds in Roatan. The water clears from the rains and the cold winter currents come in. December diving is great, a little cool but the drift is nice.
What Rough Conditions in Roatan are Actually like
In October 2024, I was teaching a rescue course in Roatan. It was a beautiful day, very little wind, but we were gifted with a local phenomenon called “olas muertas”.
Dead waves.
Ok that’s a bit dramatic, but when I tell you I was demonstrating rescue breaths, then turning around and vomiting into the sea, the name actually fits quite well.
Olas Muertas (Dead Waves) – when there are large swells that don’t cap off, the local captains call them dead waves. Passive but they’re the ones that make you seasick. Huge rolling swells that never seem to end.
Strong Winds – strong winds are rough because they cause choppy, incomplete waves. The inconsistent movement rocks the boats quickly and without pattern. Imagine trying to pass up weights, or climbing a boat ladder with your gear while it’s rocking.
That’s why we don’t dive in strong winds.
Can you dive with whale sharks in Roatan?
Not Really – Whale sharks are occasionally spotted around Roatan, but sightings are rare and unpredictable. You should not book a Roatan dive trip expecting to encounter one.
Utila is much better known for whale-shark activity, although sightings are never guaranteed there either. Come to Roatan for its coral reefs, walls, channels and wrecks, and treat a whale-shark sighting as an extraordinary bonus.
Can you scuba dive in Roatan Year-Round?
Yes! Thanks to the variety on the island, you can almost always find a sheltered spot to dive on the island. However, the quality of the dives varies over the year.
October & November experience the worst weather, and many businesses take their holiday during this time.
What is the water temperature in Roatan?
Warm – Roatan has warm Caribbean water. In the winter it is around 26c, but can get as cool as 24c. In the summer the water temp is consistently 30c and clear.
Do I need a wetsuit in Roatan?
Yes – most people wear at least a 3mm shorty for Roatan dives. I am warm in just skins, and in the winter I add my thermal vest and tights.
Shev’s Final Verdict
My favourite time to dive in Roatan is late August through early September.
The island is quieter, the water is warm, silverside season is underway and the heavy rainy-season runoff has often not arrived yet.
For divers who want the safest general recommendation, April through July offers some of the most dependable conditions.
I would avoid planning a short, dive-focused trip during October or November. I would also choose several other months before February, especially if diving the northwest side is important to you.
Roatan may offer diving throughout most of the year, but timing still matters. The right month can give you warmer water, clearer visibility, quieter boats and better access to the sites that make the island worth travelling for.
