Roatan Weather by Month
January – Coldest month in Roatan
January is my least favourite month in Roatan. The last few years have seen stronger winds, more frequent north winds, and cooler temperatures.
As a dive operator, every day is a logistical nightmare as you try to predict the weather.
But as a kite-surfer, January is a great time in Roatan.
February
February has less rain, but it is still cool and windy. In February the high season really starts on the island, and it gets much busier.
March
The weather starts to warm up and calm down. March begins the best of the dive season in Roatan.
I like March because it’s temperate on the island, but it is the busiest month in Roatan, too! If you plan to visit Roatan in March, make sure you book your diving and accommodations ahead. Be especially careful during the easter holiday.
April
Look out for easter week in April too. This is a big holiday in latin countries, so it gets crazy busy on the island.
But the weather and diving is great. If you stay at a diving resort in Roatan you won’t notice the crowds so much.

May
Shoulder season in Roatan: Things slow down on the island. May is a great month for budget travellers; there are lots of deals and packages for May.
June – Windiest Month in Roatan
This is a great time for kiteboarding in the East End of Roatan.
It may be the windiest month, but it’s still great for diving as the winds are usually from the south. So you can still have great dives on the north side of the island.
July
Warm weather and perfect diving conditions. The island is busy with European tourists, but slower than the winter season. July is one of the best times to visit Roatan.
August
The silversides arrive in Roatan! This is a special time to dive on the island. Tourism is busy but not too crazy.
September – Hottest Month in Roatan
It’s the hottest month, but for me, September is the best month to visit Roatan. The diving is the best, tourism is lower, and there is amazing stuff happening underwater.
October
October is my least favourite month in Roatan. Over the last few years there have been the most storms this month. But that is why it’s the cheapest month to go to Roatan.
November – Rainiest Month in Roatan
October and November are essentially the same to me. The lowest season on the island. This is when some shops close for maintenance, and dive instructors take their holidays.
December
The weather balances from the fall storms, and the seasonal residents begin to return to the island. Tourism picks up for the Christmas holiday and the New Year!
Hurricane Season in Roatan
Roatan actually doesn’t have a hurricane season! Thanks to its protected position inside the Bay of Honduras, hurricanes usually pass by.
But Roatan is not immune to the side effects. The island will get heavy rains and maybe even tropical storms when a hurricane passes in the East Caribbean.
Hurricane season is officially June to November, with most storms being in October or November (historically).
When it rains in Roatan, it rains overnight or for just a couple hours. It is very rare for it to rain multiple days in a row.
Best Time to Visit Roatan by Travel Style
For Sunshine and Beach Time
The spring & summer (March to August) are the sunniest months. There is very little wind during this time, making for great diving, snorkelling, and swimming.
Budget Travelers
September-November are the shoulder season in Roatan. Very few crowds & cruise ships coming through. I avoid October as it is the rainiest month, but September is my favourite month in Roatan.
For Diving
March-September is the best time to dive in Roatan. October & January seem to be the worst months for diving due to strong north winds and lots of rain.
In my opinion, August and September are the best months to dive in Roatan.

When Not to Visit Roatan
In my experience over the last few years (since 2023) my least favourite months on the island are January and October. Both of these months have had excessive amounts of rain & wind.
This bothers me more because it makes diving so difficult, so if you’re not diving, the rain and wind might bother you less. But when I moved to Roatan, and it was 16 °C and raining in January, I was unprepared. I had to sleep in my hoodie!
Shev’s Summary: When Should You Go to Roatan?
March to April: Best overall conditions
May and September: Best balance of value and weather
October and November: Best for budget travel
December to March: Best for winter escapes
Is there a bad time to visit Roatan?
No – but I recommend avoiding October & January if you want to dive.
