Tejon Beach Huatulco

One of the four beaches inside of Chahue bay in Huatulco, Tejon beach is one of the more popular of Huatulco’s hidden beaches thanks to its proximity to town and accessibility from many hotels, despite its short but steep hike.

Small, peaceful, and mostly off-the-grid, Tejon Beach Huatulco is a great place to spend one of your Huautlco beach days!}

Worth the Visit?

Yes!
Tejon requires a short hike but is highly rewarding to visit. A mix of quiet beach with the option to purchase extras from the beach’s only restaurant.

About Playa El Tejon Huatulco

Tejons are members of the raccoon family. They are small animals with long noses and tails, they forage for food like nuts and fruits in the trees around Huatulco
The Tejon is commonly seen around Huatulco, especially in the National Park. You might see them jumping in the trees or scurrying along the ground looking for food.

Tejon is one of my favourite beaches because it can feel very remote, but is relatively easy to access. The name comes from a member of the local wildlife (pictured above) of the same name. The English name for Tejon is Coati, and they are a member of the raccoon family.

You can often see Tejon’s hanging out in the trees around Huatulco with their long snouts and noses, looking for fruits to munch on.

This beach is now home to a small restaurant, but otherwise, it is largely untouched. One of the main attractions of Tejon beach is an unusually large tree that has collected a mess of branches. It has a haystack-type effect, so you can walk under the tree and set up your picnic in the shade!

Is El Tejon Beach Safe?

Despite being less popular than some of Huatulco’s other beaches, Tejon is busy enough to feel safe at all times. There is a restaurant on the beach and usually one or two other groups of people around.

Huatulco is a very safe area and I have thankfully not had any negative experiences here. Always use common sense, and remember that Huatulco is a tourist area so there are sometimes more crimes of opportunity when people are drinking excessively.

The tricky thing about getting to Tejon can be parking, as the path entrance is next to the road there is not a lot of room for a vehicle. So I definitely recommend going by bike, walking, taxi, or even moto.

Another risk Tejon beach presents is the steep walk down to access it. The hike is less complicated than La Esperanza and very short, but still requires some maneuvering and is difficult while carrying your beach supplies.

Never leave home without travel insurance, especially these days! I recommend:

Is it safe to swim at Tejon Beach?

Yes – sometimes. Similar to La Esperanza, another beach in Chahue, Tejon can be unpredictable. The water is usually safe to wade in around the edges of Tejon, but I have also been there on days when the surf is very high and I dared not approach it. Always use your best judgment, and be aware there are no services (like a lifeguard) nearby.

Water pools around the rocks and sand at each end of the small beach, so you can often safely cool down there!

How to get to Tejon Beach

There is no official parking area at Tejon beach Huatulco, so I usually go in a taxi or by moto, or sometimes walk or bike! Some hotels are very close to Tejon beach so it is easier to walk.

From La Crucecita, head down Blvd Benito Juarez away from Chahue and towards Arrocito. As you start to head up the hill, you will pass the entrance to Mirador Chahue and Playa Esperanza (about 400m past Marina Chahue).

The next right is the one you want, you will see some landscaping and a few street lights, it is a much more obvious turn than the path to La Esperanza. Turn right and follow the road up until it curves left.

Follow the road as it bends left (ignore the right path that leads up to housing), and at the peak of the road, you will see a little cement pad with a trash can, and a view of Tejon Beach! This is where you will find the trail, just to the right of the cement pad.

You will then have to walk down the trail to the beach. It is a little steep, but a very short walk down. Here is a little video of the route up to the top:

Playa Tejon Huatulco Services

Not long ago Tejon beach was completely unserviced, but just this past year a little restaurant popped up. While I enjoyed the serenity of a completely simple beach, it is nice to have access to a cold beverage if you don’t feel like hauling a cooler to the beach!

Otherwise, there are no other services on the beach, including a lifeguard so be sure you are self-sufficient when visiting!

Tejon Beach Huatulco Packing list

Since Tejon beach is mostly unserviced, its important you come prepared!

We love taking our Neso tent to the beach!

#1 Sun Shelter
Tejon does not have much shade available, especially in the winter when the sun sits lower. We always take our Neso tent, and I highly recommend getting something similar! I love that the Neso tent is so easy to pack and is completely sandfree when packing it back up.

#2 Lots of Water
Again, you will not have the option to buy anything, so definitely pack lots of water for the day!
I don’t go anywhere without my Waatr bottle.

#3 A good beach towel
I like to pack light, so I always bring my Tesalate, and Manuel his Sandcloud towel. They are lightweight which we appreciate when moving about by bike and then hiking down to the beach!
