6 Oaxaca Beach Towns to Visit

Located on the southern Pacific coast of Mexico, Oaxaca is a state known for its vibrant culture, rich history, and stunning landscapes.
While Oaxaca City is a popular destination for tourists and digital nomads, many travellers miss out on the vast beauty and culture of the rest of the state!
One of the biggest draws of Oaxaca is its collection of picturesque beach towns, each with its unique charm and appeal. But which Oaxaca beach town is right for you?
From the bustling surf town of Puerto Escondido to the tranquil beaches of Huatulco, I have spent the last two years exploring Oaxaca’s gorgeous coast.
Whether you’re looking to soak up the sun, surf the waves, or dive beneath them, Oaxaca’s beach towns have something for you!
So let’s stroll along Oaxaca’s coast and find the best Oaxaca beach town for your holiday!
Pro tip: Save this map to your phone for quick reference to the locations I mention in this article!
About Oaxaca’s Coastline
Having lived on Oaxaca’s rugged coast for several years, I am still in awe of its beauty and variety!
Nestled at the foot of the Sierra Madre Sur mountain range, the coast of Oaxaca covers more than 500 km (300 miles) along the Pacific Ocean.
The unique shape of the coastline gives each town a distinct feel and strength.
My favourite way to describe the coast of Oaxaca is “wild”. Everything about it is wild. The strength of the Pacific Ocean, the dense jungle, and the rugged cliffs are largely untouched and teeming with life.
While much of the coastline is made of steep cliffs, Oaxaca has some incredible beaches. In just the small region of the Bays of Huatulco, there are more than 40 pristine beaches!
Oaxaca is dotted with dozens of coastal towns and fishing villages between the beaches and bays. Most are still authentic and remote representations of Mexican coastal culture.
Overall, the coastline of Oaxaca is a true gem of Mexico, offering visitors a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and outdoor adventure.
Whether you’re a beach lover, a wildlife enthusiast, or a culture buff, the Oaxaca coast is sure to captivate your senses and leave you with unforgettable memories.

1. Puerto Escondido – Most Famous Oaxaca Beach Town
Puerto Escondido might be a familiar Oaxaca beach town for you! Known as the surfing capital of Oaxaca, travellers have long been coming to this bustling town.
Known as the home of the “Mexican Pipeline”, the curl along Zicatela beach brings amateur and pro surfers alike to attempt the waves.
Puerto Escondido has become a hotspot for digital nomads and young travellers who enjoy the laid-back vibe and vibrant nightlife of this surfing village.
PE is the largest beach town in Oaxaca, so many are attracted to the amenities that come with larger centres.
Nightlife is what sets Puerto Escondido apart from other Oaxaca beach towns. The hotel zone of Zicatela is full of bars and restaurants showcasing live music, artisanal beer, and curated cocktails.
How to Get to Puerto Escondido
From anywhere
Most people fly into the Huatulco International Airport (Hux) and then take a private transfer, shared shuttle, or private taxi to Puerto Escondido.
PE does have a small airport that receives some domestic flights. The airport was upgraded in 2022, so hopefully more flights will be available direct to Puerto Escondido in the coming years!
How to get from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido
The ADO runs a bus from PE to Oaxaca City. The road is mountainous, but not as bad as the road from Oaxaca City to Huatulco.
How to get from Huatulco or Mazunte to Puerto Escondido
You can hire a private taxi, or take a couple of colectivos to get from other towns to Puerto Escondido.
First, you can take a taxi or colectivo to Pochutla. From Pochutla, you can take the Delphines van straight to Puerto Escondido.

Best Beaches in Puerto Escondido
Zicatela Beach
The best beach in Puerto Escondido is the famous Zicatela Beach. At 3.5 kilometres long, Playa Zicatela is an impressive and beautiful beach, known for its strong surf and killer sunsets.
Many Puerto Escondido beach clubs, boutique hotels and resorts, and nightlife can be found along Zicatela Beach.
There are many activities at Zicatela. You might see skydivers landing, surfing riding the waves, or tourists riding horses along the beach at any given moment.
Playa Carrizalillo
This hidden playa is the best beach in Puerto Escondido to relax and swim.
Hidden in a cove near Puerto Escondido’s downtown, Carrizalillo is protected from currents and much safer for swimming than Zicatela.
Bacocho Beach
Playa Bacocho is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of Zicatela Beach. You will get the same incredible sunset views but with only 2 beach clubs on the entire beach, it’s a much quieter place to be!
Playa Bacocho is also an important turtle nesting area, so if you’re lucky you might see the turtle making their way onto the beach to nest in the evening!

Things to do in Puerto Escondido
Take a Surfing Lesson
You can’t visit the surfing capital of Oaxaca and not try it out! Whether you bring your own, rent a board, or take a surfing lesson, going surfing in Puerto Escondido is one of the best things to do!
See the Bioluminescence
There are several lagoons around Puerto Escondido famous for their bioluminescent plankton. Taking a tour to swim or paddle with this natural phenomenon is a must-do for your time in Puerto Escondido!
Go Whale Watching
Like Huatulco, many pelagics pass through the waters off the coast of Puerto Escondido. In the winter you can see humpback whales, dolphins, mantas, and even orcas if you’re lucky!

Where to Stay in Puerto Escondido
Puerto Escondido is home to some of the best beach resorts in Oaxaca. Here are just a few!
Casona Sforza
This exquisitely designed resort is on the edge of Puerto Escondido, just before Punta Zicatela. Enjoy the Mexican architecture, private plunge pools, and access to a private beach area!
Casamar Suites
Casamar Suites is an aparthotel in the Brisas de Zicatela area of Puerto Escondido. Perfect location for surfing and enjoying the nightlife of Zicatela!
The rooms in Casamar are equipped with a small kitchen, allowing guests to be independent.
Casa Mia
I stayed here with my mum and we loved it! Casa Mia is in a great location, very close to the beach, night market, and downtown Puerto Escondido. We found it comfortable and very walkable!

Where to Eat in Puerto Escondido
Puerto Escondido has a fantastic culinary scene – far more diverse than other Oaxaca beach towns. Here are a few must-try restaurants in Puerto Escondido!
Persia
I loved this restaurant! My mum and I shared a variety of authentic Persian dishes and they were absolutely mouth-watering.
El Cafecito
Puerto Escondido’s most popular breakfast restaurant is located right off Zicatela Beach. Boasting freshly made bread and delicious breakfasts, if you can get a table at El Cafecito you won’t be disappointed.
Punta Origen
Punta Origen is a collection of food vendors with a shared dining space. It’s a great way to share a meal with a group because everyone can choose what style of meal they’d like!
Punta Origen also hosts events like open mic nights, creating a great space to hang out in the evenings!
Puerto Escondido Summary
Puerto Escondido is Oaxaca’s hippest beach town! It’s the place to be if you are looking for a place full of activities and other travellers.
Surfing, skydiving, and enjoying the nightlife are what Puerto Escondido is all about!

2. Santa Cruz Huatulco – Best Oaxaca Beach District
Santa Cruz is the main beach town in the region of Huatulco. When people refer to Huatulco, they are actually meaning a region of the Oaxacan coast, not a specific town.
Generally, Huatulco is short for Las Bahias de Huatulco, or the Bays of Huatulco.
Huatulco is a very unique part of Mexico. Just as the name suggests, Huatulco is home to 9 gorgeous bays and more than 36 beaches. The topography of the area faces southwest so is less susceptible to the waves and currents of the Pacific Ocean.
Thanks to these natural protections, Huatulco has the best Oaxaca beaches for swimming, snorkelling, paddle boarding, and scuba diving.
In fact, Huatulco has some of the best snorkelling in Mexico! Thanks to the protections of the Huatulco National Park, the coral reefs are pristine and full of life.
Huatulco is divided into 3 main towns, and then by neighbourhoods. Read more about the sectors of Huatulco here.
How to Get to Huatulco
Despite being a remote Oaxaca beach town, Huatulco is easy to get to!
From Anywhere
Many airlines from Mexico, the US, and Canada fly directly to the Huatulco International Airport (HUX). From the airport, it’s only a 25-minute drive to La Crucecita.
From the airport, it is best to reserve a private airport transfer, take a taxi, or use a shared shuttle service to your hotel.
How to get to Huatulco from Oaxaca City
You can fly from Oaxaca City to Huatulco via AeroTucan or AeroVega. These are small 6-seater planes, so not ideal if you aren’t good with turbulence or small spaces.
By bus
ADO runs bus lines between Huatulco and Oaxaca City. The route goes through Salina Cruz and around the mountains. This is the most comfortable option and takes about 10 hours.
By van
I normally travel to Oaxaca City from Huatulco in a transfer van. Columbos Expressos Huatulco and Huatulco 2000 run transfers daily.
At about 6.5 hours, this is the shortest route from Oaxaca to Huatulco, but the hardest. The road is very twisty!
Tip from a local: Break up the trip between Huatulco and Oaxaca City by staying in San Jose del Pacifico for a day or two. I suggest staying one night there and one night in Pluma Hidalgo. Or more!
The mountains of Huatulco are so beautiful, it’s a shame not to spend time enjoying them!

Best Beaches in Huatulco
This is tough – there are so many to choose from! But after two years of living here, my favourite beaches are:
Maguey
This is the best beach in Huatulco for an easy beach day. Easy to get to by taxi, fantastic for swimming and snorkelling, and fully serviced so no packing is necessary.
Half the beach is filled with restaurants, and the other half is empty, so if you would like to pack a picnic basket you can!

Photo: Shev
Organo
Organo Bay is the calmest bay in Huatulco. It is the most secluded and protected, so it’s almost always great for swimming!
Playa Organo is the best beach in Huatulco for a quiet, secluded experience. It requires a 15-minute walk through the jungle to get there, but as you can see by the photos it is well worth the trip!
This is my favourite beach to bring family & friends. We pack a lunch, cooler, and our Neso tent and enjoy swimming and snorkelling off the beautiful and calm beach.
Bahia San Agustin
San Agustin is the best beach in Huatulco for snorkelling. Located at the edge of the Huatulco National Park, the reefs here are the best in the district!
Adventuring to San Agustin is one of my favourite day trips. The restaurants are great, I love exploring the town, and snorkelling of course!

Things to Do in Huatulco
Aside from discovering all the beaches, there are so many things to do in Huatulco! Here are my top recommendations:
🚤Take a Boat Tour
If there is one thing you have to do in Huatulco, it’s to see the region from the sea. It’s the best way to appreciate the beauty of Oaxaca’s coastline.
A full-day boat tour from Santa Cruz will take you to you see 7 of the 9 bays of Huatulco, snorkel, and maybe even see turtles, humpback whales, and dolphins!
🤿 Go Scuba Diving
The Pacific is so full of life, and Huatulco is no exception! I came to Huatulco to become a professional diver, and it changed my life!
While diving in Huatulco you might see octopus, moray eels, dozens of types of rays, seahorses, all the fish you can imagine, and maybe even a False Orca or Manta ray.
Tip from a local: Check out Huatulco Scuba, my favourite dive shop in Huatulco!
⛰️ Explore the Mountains
Just an hour’s drive from Huatulco you will find yourself in the jungle swimming under a waterfall, learning about coffee production, or sampling that famous Oaxacan chocolate. These are my favourite mountain tours:
- All-day Las Brisas (Magic Falls) Tour
- Day trip to Pluma Hidalgo
- Hagia Sofia zipline and garden adventure

Where to Stay in Huatulco
Huatulco is home to the best all-inclusive resorts in Oaxaca, so this is a popular choice for many. But there are also some great boutique hotels on and off the water!
Dreams Huatulco
The best beach resort in Huatulco is Dreams Huatulco Resort & Spa. Popular with families, this resort has activities for kids and is pet-friendly, so it’s not hard to see why Dreams Huatulco is popular for family holidays!
Quinta Bella Huatulco
This is the best beach hotel in Huatulco. Located in Chahue Bay, the Quinta Bella has 5-star amenities yet is right in the heart of town!
Quinta Bella is known for its private plunge pools, great sunrise views, and incredible on-site restaurants.
Since it’s not all-inclusive, guests of Quinta Bella love having the freedom to explore Huatulco’s great local restaurants!
Holiday Inn Huatulco
A familiar name right in the centre of Santa Cruz, Holiday Inn Huatulco is a great beach-front, pet-friendly hotel in Huatulco.
Looking over the Santa Cruz Marina, the Holiday Inn Huatulco is a comfortable, central stay in Huatulco. It’s in the centre of the activity of the town, a 20-minute walk to La Crucecita, and easy to catch the bus or a taxi from!
It also has Huatulco’s only Starbucks in the lobby.

Where to Eat in Huatulco
My favourite subject! Huatulco has so many great restaurants, and new ones open all the time. Here are a few to get you started:
Romero
One of the newest restaurants in Huatulco, Romero is a breakfast and lunch place in downtown La Crucecita. All of their dishes are fresh, beautifully plated on barra negro pottery,
But be early! Romero is immensely popular, but absolutely worth a visit at least once during your time in Huatulco.
Los Parados Tacos
For an authentic Oaxacan taco experience, come to Los Parados! Named “the people are standing” because of its popularity, Los Parados is top-notch Mexican cuisine in Huatulco.
I recommend the fish or shrimp tacos or try your first tlayuda here – a staple in Oaxacan cuisine. My favourites are the arrachera (flank steak) or costilla (ribs).
La Parota
Located in Tangolunda, La Parota is a fine-dining Oaxacan restaurant. Local chef Alejandro takes classic Oaxacan food and turns them into exquisite dishes bursting with flavour.
I love to bring people here for special dinners and birthdays.

3. Mazunte – Oaxaca’s “Hippy” Beach Town
Mazunte is the second most famous of the Oaxaca beach towns. Once known as a fishing village, Mazunte is now Oaxaca’s centre for wellness retreats, ecotourism, and food.
Often referred to as the “hippy village”, Mazunte is a small but diverse town on the coast. The town is mostly populated by foreigners who have settled and built their lives in the area around Mazunte.
What I appreciate about Mazunte is that most of the hotels, stores, and businesses are built around sustainability. The area is remote, so there are not a lot of resources which has encouraged businesses to choose efficient eco practices.
How to Get to Mazunte
From Anywhere
To get to Mazunte it is easiest to fly into the Huatulco International Airport, then take a private transfer, shuttle, or taxi service to your accommodations.
From Oaxaca City to Mazunte
Take the ADO, colectivo, or van service to Pochutla, there are many options! From Pochutla, you need to take a taxi or colectivo to Mazunte.
Lineas Unidas runs from Oaxaca City to Pochutla.
How to get to Mazunte from Huatulco
You can take a colectivo from outside the Altamar bus station in La Crucecita, or from the highway outside the airport.
How to get to Mazunte from Puerto Escondido
The easiest way to get to Mazunte from Puerto Escondido is to hire a taxi. Most are willing to take you for about $800 pesos, well worth it if you have multiple people or a lot of luggage.
If you prefer to travel on a budget in Oaxaca, you can take a colectivo or bus from Puerto Escondido, like the Delphines or Sur en route to Pochutla.
Get off in San Antonio Village (before Pochutla), then take another colectivo to Mazunte.
Keep in mind that your accommodation might not be in the centre of Mazunte, so if you take a colectivo you will then need another taxi to take you from town to your hotel.
Tip from a local: Try this travel hack! Book a tour from Puerto Escondido to Mazunte like this one that includes transportation. Then you can bring your luggage and just not take the transfer back!
Always confirm this with the trip provider before taking the tour, but I have done it before and it works great!

Best Beaches in Mazunte
Playa Mazunte
The main beach in Mazunte is of course Mazunte Beach! The downtown is built around this charming playa making it the easiest to access the beach in Mazunte.
The area is prone to currents and riptides, but you will still see many people in the water. You can swim if you are comfortable, while others prefer to play in the waves! You will see some
Playa Mermejita
Another wild pocket on the Oaxacan coast is Playa Mermejita. A stunning, black sand beach faces northwest into the Pacific Ocean giving stunning views of a near-secret beach.
La Ventanilla
My favourite part of Mazunte is the beach and the town of La Ventanilla. The beach is stunning and an important turtle nesting ground.
La Ventanilla means “little window”, and gets its name from the rock formation at the end of the beach. There is a rock with a hole in it and during the solstices, the sun rises right in the centre of the rock.
The village of La Ventanilla runs conservation projects protecting the lagoons and the turtle nesting areas. You can support them by taking a tour to see the crocodiles and release turtles at sunset!

Things to do in Mazunte
🌅Hike Punta Cometa at Sunset
This is the quintessential Mazunte experience. Every night at sunset, locals and travellers alike make their way down the trail to the peninsula known as Punta Cometa.
From here you will be treated to an incredible view of the sunset. It’s a beautiful experience to share!
Tip from a local: The hike to Punta Cometa is short, but the trail is steep and rocky. Wear decent shoes and be sure to have a flashlight for the walk back!
🐢 Visit the National Turtle Centre
I think this is one of the best things to do when visiting the Oaxacan coast. I LOVED my visit to the National Mexican Turtle Centre in Mazunte and learned so much.
Admission is very cheap, but bring your headphones! Tours are self-guided, so you download their app and listen to the info at each stop.
They have turtles from all over Oaxaca, so you start with the freshwater turtles and tortoises, then move to the sea turtle conservation area.
🧘♀️Attend a Wellness Retreat
After turtles, Mazunte is most famous for its many wellness retreats. Whether you would like to improve your yoga, practice meditation, or participate in a sound bath, Mazunte has a wellness activity for you!

Where to Stay in Mazunte
Mazunte has some incredible eco-hotels, here are my favourites!
Hotel Casa Lu
Enjoy Mazunte in complete peace and luxury at Hotel Casa Lu. Guests love the friendly bar staff, the beachfront pool, and of course – the views!

Facing the black sand of Playa Mermejita, Casa Ofelia is one of Mazunte’s top-rated hotels. Watch the sunset from the beachfront pool or your ocean-view balconies or surf in the waves on the beach!
The hotel is a short walk to downtown Mazunte and near the trail for Punta Cometa.
Casa Xalli
A quiet retreat on La Ventanilla beach, Casa Xalli is the perfect quiet escape. Away from the downtown, fall asleep to the sounds of nothing but the ocean waves!

Where to Eat in Mazunte
Mazunte is famous for its diverse food scene and seafood – it was once a fishing village after all!

I love visiting this little deli on my trips to Mazunte. My mum has some food sensitivities, and Lodeli has so many great options for her!
Lodeli Bar serves fresh, homemade, gourmet meals and take-home products. All served on their gorgeous outdoor patio!
Jalilh Restaurant and Bar
This is the best beach restaurant in Mazunte. The staff is always great, they have plenty of beach chairs, and the food is well-priced and delicious!

The best place in Mazunte for a proper coffee. Using local beans grown and roasted in nearby Pluma Hidalgo, Cometa Cafe serves hot and cold espresso drinks any way you like it!
Mazunte, Oaxaca Summary
Visiting the Oaxacan beach town of Mazunte is perfect for anyone looking to step back from the world.
Mazunte is a calm, wellness-focused beach community. If you are looking to unplug and relax, Mazunte is a great choice for your Oaxaca beach holiday!

The most distinctive feature of Zipolite is its relaxed attitude towards nudity. The beach is known for its clothing-optional policy, attracting a diverse crowd of free-spirited travellers from around the world.

Despite its small size, Zipolite offers plenty of activities for visitors. The beach is great for sunbathing, body boarding, and surfing.
For those interested in exploring the local culture, there are a variety of traditional markets and restaurants in town, as well as opportunities to learn about local crafts and music.

Playa Zipolite
The beach that draws thousands of tourists every year – Playa Zipolite!
Mexico’s only sanctioned clothing-optional beach, Zipolite is popular with adults of every age looking to relax and enjoy their Oaxaca beach holiday.
The waves at Playa Zipolite can be rough and swimming is not recommended. You can play in the surf, body board, and even rent a surfboard or take a lesson!

Travellers love the calmer vibe at Playa el Amor. The waves and vibe are calmer.
Things to Do in Zipolite
Visit a Beach Club
Zipolite is famous for its beautiful beach clubs that stretch along the white sand. It’s a great activity to do for your day on the beach because most of them have pools that face the ocean.

Enjoy the Food
I love visiting the many bakeries, restaurants, and snack shops in Zipolite.
Surf or Boogie Board in the Waves
